Crane dismantling on a fast-track schedule

MS-Steel Oy had an old crane belonging to a customer that had to be scrapped quickly so that the company could free up the space it occupied for other use. MS-Steel was therefore looking for a fast dismantling project that would be carried out cost-effectively and safely.

“When choosing a demolition contractor, it was important to us that the work would be done safely and precisely. I remembered that Umacon had dismantled cranes before, and when we got a sensible proposal straight away, the work got started quickly,” says Petri Metsola.

What we did

  • We were responsible for project management of the crane dismantling
  • We planned the dismantling of the harbour crane
  • We ensured site safety for workers and for people moving around nearby
  • We kept the environment clean
  • We maximised the project’s recycling rate by sorting the demolition materials on site
  • We reported the waste management details accurately

Petri Metsola, Managing Director of MS-Steel, would recommend our demolition project management and industrial demolition work for similar projects.

100%

The project’s recovery rate reached 100%, which means that all demolition materials were sent for recycling and none went to final disposal (landfill).

Safety and the environment at the heart of the dismantling

In crane dismantling, the emphasis is on occupational safety and keeping the environment clean. The dismantling process involves three significant risk factors, which are managed through precise planning and careful execution.

Like most harbour cranes, MS-Steel’s crane stood right next to the water, which brings both safety and environmental risks. When working close to the waterline, we have to make sure that no one works too close to the water’s surface and that no demolition materials end up in the water during dismantling.

Working at height is another key part of crane dismantling. Workers climb to heights of several tens of metres, which calls not only for safe working methods and proper protective equipment but also for particular care and good judgement from every worker. In addition, the work involves detaching parts weighing hundreds of tonnes, which can come loose just metres away from the operative flame-cutting at height. That is why every stage of the work has to be carefully thought through and calculated.

The work also has to take into account the safety of people moving around the area and the continuity of operations there. All measures are planned so that the environment stays protected and the site stays safe for everyone involved.

“Working near water calls for particular attention to environmental issues. Hundreds of tonnes of material come off the crane, and it also contains substances that are harmful to the environment, such as oils. All this has to be factored into the working methods and their phasing so that the environment stays clean during the work,” says Joni Pietiläinen, Site Supervisor at Umacon.

In our client's words

Getting this crane dismantled was as straightforward as going to the shop: we bought it and we paid for it. Things happened the way we’d agreed, which was important to us. The site manager was very proactive. Umacon came across as very reliable.

There are superpowers behind every uncompromising result

Massive Force

Our Massive Force is built on our top-class equipment and decades of expertise. We demolish even the largest structures in a controlled way, as if they were Lego bricks.

Risk Compass

There’s nothing magical about our risk management – it’s based on careful anticipation and nearly 40 years of experience in challenging working environments. We spot risks before they arise and ensure safety on every project.

Safety Shield

Safety is our number one priority. We don’t have an invisible force field, but our commitment to health and safety ensures that everyone on site and in the surrounding area stays safe.

Time Bender

We can’t control time, but we arrive at lightning speed and work whenever you need us. We demolish in record time, even round the clock, if it means we can spare you the costs of a production stoppage.

Circular Force

In every demolition material, we see the raw material of the future. We maximise the recycling rates of our demolition projects to nearly 100%.

Scrap Bank

We became demolition contractors, not bankers – but we handle materials worth millions as if they were our own. Everything of value stays safe throughout our projects.
