Slab transfer car track dismantling at a hot rolling mill
We dismantled the old slab transfer car track at Outokumpu’s hot rolling mill and prepared the base for the new rails, working around the clock during a maintenance outage.

Outage work means a tight schedule
LTR-Rakennus Oy replaced Outokumpu’s slab transfer car track during the annual maintenance outage and chose Umacon to remove the old rails, saw and break out the channels for the new rails, and drill the anchor holes for them.
Maintenance outages are typically challenging for two reasons: demolition and construction take place in the same area at the same time, and a tight schedule has to be met. If the demolition overruns, construction is delayed too. Even a small overrun during a maintenance outage is extremely costly for an industrial client. For LTR-Rakennus, it was therefore essential that the demolition contractor they chose could complete the work to a precise schedule.
“In an annual maintenance outage, the schedule has to run to the hour. We needed a demolition contractor with enough resources for a job of this size who could stick to a tight schedule,” says Antti Vaara, LTR’s Contracts Manager for Northern Finland.
What we did
- We prepared carefully for the outage work
- We removed the old slab transfer car track from the concrete floor along a 300-metre stretch
- We sawed the channels for the new rails and carried out the concrete breaking along the 300-metre stretch with demolition robots
- We drilled the anchor holes for the new track’s rail fixings
- We ensured site safety for workers and other contractors
- We worked at Outokumpu day and night for a week and finished the job ahead of schedule

Preparing carefully for a maintenance outage
We carried out the demolition work at Outokumpu during a maintenance outage, working around the clock for 7 days.
We always prepare carefully for demolition projects, but maintenance outages call for extra preparation. On top of planning and scheduling the work and choosing the working methods and equipment, we reserve backup equipment for maintenance outages so that the work is not delayed if something goes wrong.
“In maintenance outages, the client understandably sets strict conditions for the schedule and for taking other contractors in the same work area into account. If a machine breaks down, the work can’t wait while it’s repaired. The risks of situations like this have to be foreseen and properly prepared for,” says Juha Jylkäs, Project Manager at Umacon.
The preparation showed as soon as the work began, and it got under way as planned.
“The demolition got off to a good start. It had been well prepared in advance so that the work could get going as agreed,” Vaara says.
Preparing the new track was a round-the-clock job
We dismantled the old slab transfer car track and prepared the area for the construction of the new track during Outokumpu’s maintenance outage, working around the clock.
Our work began with dismantling the old track inside the hot rolling mill, removing the rails from the concrete floor along a 300-metre stretch.
Once the old rails were out, we moved on to defining the outline of the new track area. The edges were cut using diamond sawing, with a floor saw making boundary cuts along both sides of the new track.
With the outline cut, a channel had to be made in the area so that the new rails could be installed together with their mounting plates. We broke out the 300-metre-long area with Brokk demolition robots to a width of 800 mm and a depth of approximately 300 mm.
Once the channel was finished, anchor holes were drilled in the track bed for the new rails’ fixings.
“It’s great to take part in contracts like this with such capable partners. The client planned and managed the project really well, and our task was clear. Working with LTR-Rakennus went so well that our whole team found the job rewarding,” Jylkäs adds.
There are superpowers behind every top-quality result
Massive Force
Our Massive Force is built on our top-class equipment and decades of expertise. We demolish even the largest structures in a controlled way, as if they were Lego bricks.
Risk Compass
There’s nothing magical about our risk management – it’s based on careful anticipation and nearly 40 years of experience in challenging working environments. We spot risks before they arise and ensure safety on every project.
Safety Shield
Safety is our number one priority. We don’t have an invisible force field, but our commitment to health and safety ensures that everyone on site and in the surrounding area stays safe.
Time Bender
We can’t control time, but we arrive at lightning speed and work whenever you need us. We demolish in record time, even round the clock, if it means we can spare you the costs of a production stoppage.
Circular Force
In every demolition material, we see the raw material of the future. We maximise the recycling rates of our demolition projects to nearly 100%.
Scrap Bank
We became demolition contractors, not bankers – but we handle materials worth millions as if they were our own. Everything of value stays safe throughout our projects.
