Oil boiler moving and rigging
We prepared the oil boiler in Savon Voima’s building for moving and rigging, then moved it out intact so that it could be reused.
Energiakuja 3, Iisalmi
A reliable contractor for industrial machinery moving and rigging
Savon Voima is electrifying its district heating, which meant that an oil boiler had to be removed from its Iisalmi site. The oil boiler was going to its next user outside Savon Voima, so it had to be disconnected and moved out of the building intact. As well as the moving and rigging, concrete structures had to be removed from the building by diamond wire sawing.
Aki Rantonen, Savon Voima’s Project Manager responsible for investment projects in energy production, wanted to find reliable and experienced professionals for the moving and rigging and the diamond wire sawing. Another criterion was that the contractor had a firm grasp of health and safety planning, implementation and documentation.
“I was wondering who could do this for us reliably. In principle, the job was simple, but when you’re moving a 35-tonne boiler out through a wall in one piece, there are a few special things you have to take into account. There was also some wire sawing work involved, in other words sawing concrete structures, so it was a bonus that Umacon had its own people who specialise in that method. Umacon was an easy choice, because I got the whole service from one place,” Rantonen says.
Umacon was already known at Savon Voima, both among Savon Voima’s own staff and through its subcontractors, and positive experiences from previous demolition projects had reached Rantonen’s ears.
“A colleague of mine in Joensuu used Umacon when old equipment was being dismantled to make way for a larger heat pump plant. And my colleague spoke highly of how well Umacon’s work went there,” Rantonen continues.
What we did
- We prepared the building’s oil boiler for moving and rigging by dismantling the technical installations, connections, pipework, work platforms and equipment bases associated with the boiler
- We made an opening in the building’s wall and diamond-sawed the plinth to the right level
- We placed the oil boiler on a transport trolley in a stable position
- We moved the oil boiler, destined for reuse, out of the building intact
- We ensured site safety for workers and everyone moving around the site area
- We maximised the project’s recovery rate by sorting demolition materials on site
- We ensured cost-effectiveness when planning the work stages
- We completed the work within the agreed schedule

The move came down to centimetres
To prepare for the move, some of the building’s structures were demolished so that the oil boiler could be moved out. In the cramped spaces, all the technical installations, connections and pipework associated with the boiler were dismantled. The work platforms, concrete equipment bases and a support beam were cut free by diamond wire sawing and removed before the move. An opening was made in the building’s wall so that the boiler could be moved out through it.
“The opening was made by sawing and demolishing the wall structure, after which the plinth was diamond-sawn to the right level. Sawing the opening in the wall is a matter of centimetres, so that the move succeeds and no more of the structure has to be demolished than necessary. That’s how we make sure the whole job stays as cost-effective as possible,” says Umacon’s Project Manager Juha Jylkäs.
The move began with jacking up the boiler and placing it on a transport trolley in a stable position. This stage requires care, precision and skill to avoid any damage.
“Moving and rigging is precise work, and it has to be done carefully from planning through to execution. Overall, the job went as planned and the team did an excellent job – the credit goes to a skilled crew,” Jylkäs stresses.
Everyone is happy with the result
Rantonen is pleased with how the project was carried out and with health and safety during the work.
“You can tell these guys work on big sites and for what you might call demanding clients. I’ve been in the industry a long time myself, and I’d say I understand quite a lot about these things in general. But you can really see that whenever you get the pros in a field to do a job, the way they work is a bit different. Hardly any wasted movement,” Rantonen remarks.
Rantonen describes the cooperation with Umacon as good and says the workers left a positive impression.
“I enjoyed working with absolutely everyone. Juha is easy to get on with, and the fitters were a really fun bunch too. And you could see that they have a certain professional pride in what they do,” Rantonen adds.
Jylkäs was also pleased with the project and the cooperation with Savon Voima.
“In my view too, this was an exemplary job. It went exactly as planned. Working with Savon Voima was really smooth and everything went as we’d agreed. We got good site inductions from them and they were nice to work with. We had a week for the project and the work was done on the planned schedule. It all went as agreed,” Jylkäs says.
